TOWN OF BOWDOIN, 2019
Maine Property Tax Law provides that all persons liable to taxation shall FURNISH TO THE ASSESSOR TRUE AND PERFECT LISTS of all taxable real and personal property which they possessed on the 1st of April 2019. The Assessor may require the person furnishing the list to swear to its truth. The Assessor may also require the taxpayer to answer in writing all proper inquiries as to the nature, situation, and value of the taxpayer’s property. The list must be submitted to the Assessor’s Office on or before April 15, 2019.
EXEMPTION – VETERANS AND WIDOWS OF VERTERANS
Veteran who reach the age of 62 on or before April 1, 2019, or a veteran who is receiving a pension or compensation from the Veterans Administration for total disability must apply with the Assessor prior to April 1, 2019, for his or her exemption for the taxable year. An otherwise eligible person who neglects to comply with the requirements forfeits such exemption benefits as he might have had for the current year, except as specifically provided, in case of a unremarried widow or minor child of a veteran.
Maine law allows for a homestead exemption and resultant tax savings to eligible owners. APPLLICANTS WHO HAVE NOT FILED IN THE PAST, must file by April 1, 2019 with their local Assessor. Failure to file by an otherwise eligible property owner constitutes a waver of eligibility for the current tax year. Application forms are available online or in the Assessor’s Office.
